Appalachian Outreach
Appalachian Outreach is a multi-faceted poverty relief ministry of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, offering opportunities for students and congregations to participate in home repair, food distribution, a recycling program, a computer and GED achievement program, and a shelter for homeless women and children. Appalachian Outreach partners with JourneyPartners in fund-raising for student travelers, collecting textbooks for schools in Zimbabwe, Republic of Georgia and eastern North Carolina, collecting and shipping medications and medical supplies for international mission hospitals, and referring congregations interested in international mission immersion opportunities.
Rev. Jim Wilson, Executive Director of Appalachian Outreach, traveled with JourneyPartners for ZimJourney2007, coordinating student recruitment and pastoring student travelers, and providing expertise and experience in the construction of the House of Hope, a home for 24 AIDS orphans in Masembura, Zimbabwe. He traveled again to Zimbabwe again in the summer of 2009, serving as journey pastor for student volunteers in ZimJourney2009’s cultural and mission immersion experience, helping to expand the House of Hope, and providing clean water for the community of Nenyunga and Nenyunga Baptist Clinic.
